A year on from the ousting of Assad

Damascus, Syria — “Hold your head high, you’re a free Syrian.” The refrain of this Arabic song—now widely embraced as the unofficial anthem of a new Syria—echoes throughout Damascus. It blares from market loudspeakers, rings out during celebrations in the central square, and is even sung by the man offering traditional coffee to new arrivals at the airport. For decades, many Syrians lived with lowered gazes under the authoritarian rule of the Al-Assad family. The regime maintained an expansive surveillance system in which the feared Mukhabarat , the intelligence network, kept the population in check. Remaining silent was often the safest choice—until the Arab Spring ignited an uprising, and Assad’s fierce response plunged the nation into a ten-year civil war. Thousands gather for anti-Trump ‘No Kings’ protests across US

More than 2,600 events are anticipated across the nation, according to the organizers of the "No Kings" protests against President Donald Trump's policies on immigration, education, and security. Protesters have gathered in a number of cities in the United States. The government shutdown, which has shut down federal programs and services as well as testing the fundamental balance of power as an aggressive executive confronts Congress and the courts in ways that organizers warn are a slide toward US authoritarianism, is the backdrop for Saturday's rally, the third mass mobilization since Trump's return to the White House.

The rallies began outside of the United States, with a few hundred people protesting outside the US embassy in London and hundreds more in Madrid and Barcelona. Numerous protesters in Northern Virginia were crossing roads in the direction of Washington, DC, by walking on overpasses on Saturday morning.

Attacks on the reasons for protesting are particularly enraged among many protesters. One person held up a sign that read, "Nothing is more patriotic than protesting" in Bethesda, Maryland. Trump is away from Washington at his home in Florida, Mar-a-Lago. They claim that they are calling me a king. In an interview with Fox News that was broadcast on Friday, Trump stated, "I'm not a king." On Saturday, hundreds of coalition partners are planning more than 2,600 rallies in both large and small cities.
