A year on from the ousting of Assad

Image
Damascus, Syria — “Hold your head high, you’re a free Syrian.” The refrain of this Arabic song—now widely embraced as the unofficial anthem of a new Syria—echoes throughout Damascus. It blares from market loudspeakers, rings out during celebrations in the central square, and is even sung by the man offering traditional coffee to new arrivals at the airport. For decades, many Syrians lived with lowered gazes under the authoritarian rule of the Al-Assad family. The regime maintained an expansive surveillance system in which the feared Mukhabarat , the intelligence network, kept the population in check. Remaining silent was often the safest choice—until the Arab Spring ignited an uprising, and Assad’s fierce response plunged the nation into a ten-year civil war. Today, Syrians are openly and energetically marking the first anniversary of what they regard as their liberation from Assad’s government. The celebration follows a rapid rebel offensive on December 8 last year, led by fo...

US court strikes down Trump’s global tariffs as unlawful

Ruling however allows the levies to stay in place through mid-October  • The US president says he will fight back Washington, D.C.: A US appeals court has ruled that many of President Donald Trump's tariffs, which have disrupted global trade, are illegal. However, it has allowed them to remain in place for the time being to give Trump time to take his case to the Supreme Court. The 7-4 ruling by the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit on Friday affirmed a lower court’s finding that Trump had exceeded his authority in tapping emergency economic powers to impose wide-ranging duties. But the judges allowed the tariffs to stay in place through mid-October — and Trump swiftly made clear he would put the time to use.  The appeals court “incorrectly said that our Tariffs should be removed, but they know the United States of America will win in the end,” he said in a statement on his Truth Social platform lashing out at the ruling.  He added that he would fight back...

India is hit with a 50 percent tariff from Trump because it bought oil from Russia.

Image
Donald Trump imposed 50% tariffs on most US imports from India, making good on a threat to punish one of the world’s largest economies over its purchases of discounted Russian oil.  The tariffs, which came into effect just after midnight on Wednesday in Washington, risk inflicting significant damage on the Indian economy and further disrupting global supply chains This month, the United States imposed tariffs of 25% on Indian goods. However, Trump announced plans to double the rate, citing New Delhi's purchases of Russian oil as an example. The White House has argued that these purchases are indirectly funding Russia's war against Ukraine. Since re-entering the White House in January, the president of the United States has significantly increased US tariffs on goods from a large portion of the world. This has put a strain on relations with the economies of both allies and rivals and fueled fears of higher inflation. Indian exporters now face some of the highest US duties that T...

Overseas Pakistanis send record $3.2b

Image
KARACHI:  In July 2025, Pakistan received $3.21 billion in worker remittances, up 7.4% year-over-year from $2.99 billion in July 2024. These remittances were brought to the country by over 2 million economic migrants who were dissatisfied with the political and economic situation in Pakistan and sought employment elsewhere. According to preliminary data released by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), the inflows also showed a significant increase of 47.6% compared to July 2023, indicating a strong recovery in transfers of overseas workers over the past two years. Increasing inflows from Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and the European Union (EU) were primarily responsible for the expansion. However, despite the overall improvement, the data indicate emerging vulnerabilities for Pakistan's external account due to significant declines in a number of important remittance corridors. Pakistan remained dependent on the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) for th...

Redditor Orders MSI RTX 5090 Ventus 3X From Amazon but Finds No Tamper Seal; Further Investigation Revealed Ripped GPU Chip and VRAM From the PCB  Fake GeForce RTX 5090 GPUs are flooding the market once more. Japan used to be a tech giant. Why is it stuck with fax machines and ink stamps?

Image
In movies like "Akira" and "Ghost in the Shell," intelligent robots and holograms populate a futuristic Japan, and neon-lit skyscrapers and the city's famed bullet train system come to mind. But there’s a more mundane side of Japan that you won’t find anywhere in these cyberpunk films.  It involves personalized ink stamps, floppy disks, and fax machines—relics that have long since disappeared in other advanced nations but have stubbornly persisted in Japan. The delay in digital technology and subsequent bureaucracy are, for everyday residents, at best inconvenient, and at worst make you want to tear your hair out. “Japanese banks are portals to hell,” one Facebook user wrote in a local expat group.  A sarcastic commenter said, "Maybe sending a fax would help," The scale of the problem became terrifyingly clear during the Covid-19 pandemic, as the Japanese government struggled to respond to a nationwide crisis with clumsy digital tools.  They have lau...
